Horizon: The implications of the discovery of a piece of ochre in a South African cave which appears to be a work of abstract art. Historians currently believe that some 37,000 years ago human ancestors arrived in Europe for the first time, eventually wiping out their nearest relatives, the Neanderthals, as brains triumphed over brawn. But now, this find and other research suggest that complex thinking developed much earlier than previously supposed : a revelation which is causing scientists to rethink the origins of humanity.
