Founded in 1920, the American Civil Liberties Union is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization devoted to protecting the freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and extending them to groups which have historically been denied their rights. Treating people who use drugs as criminals has had serious impacts on civil liberties and diverted attention from other approaches to the problems sometimes caused by drug use.
